Janson and Davison perform Celtic tunes, American Roots, Delta blues, instrumental gems, folk-songs, solos and duets that reveal a mutual devotion to great acoustic music through songs about American rivers, Celtic kings, life, memory and the heart.

The American Guitar Masters Touring Concert Series features some of America’s top solo acoustic guitarists. Presenting a variety of tours, each one features master musicians at the top of their game in styles ranging from ancient Celtic ballads and virtuosic instrumental gems to American Roots and contemporary masterworks.  Their common vision is in bringing forth the highest level of emotive qualities of the acoustic guitar; their common goal is to delight the audience with landscape and mood of the life experiences that are the foundation of their music.

The Third Annual Beekeepers Ball

October 25th, 7pm

Tickets $22 Advance & $28 Door  21 & up

The Third Annual Beekeepers Ball is the autumn 2014 event not to miss!  Our theme this year is “Sweet as Honey,” and the night couldn’t get any sweeter with “The California Honeydrops” taking the stage!  The California Honeydrops don’t just play music—they throw parties. Drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their live shows. They’ve taken the party all over the world: on their nine European tours, to featured slots at such premiere festivals as Monterey Jazz, High Sierra, and Outside Lands, and performances in 2013 supporting B.B. King, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint. Whether in those high-profile performances or in more intimate venues where the band itself can leave the stage and get down on the dance floor, the California Honeydrops’ shared vision and purpose remain: to make the audience dance and sing.

Opening for The California Honeydrops is Southern Oregon’s own “Maestro & the Captain’s Flat 5 Flim Flam”… It’s a mouthful.. and an earful. File their music under “swing”, but it’s likely not the swing music that you’re accustomed to. The “Flat 5″ draws inspiration from 30s and 40s swing jazz, reefer tunes of early black club music and the gypsy swing era in France. The strong groovin’ bounce of their rhythm section provides a landscape for vocal harmonies and innovative improvisation. The Flat 5’s original modern acoustic swing tunes are clever, creative, and potently inviting to dance to.

The Beekeepers Ball is a fundraiser for the Bee Girl organization, a nonprofit with a world-wide presence on a mission to inspire and empower communities to conserve bees and their habitat.  This is an event for the whole community to celebrate honey, the work of our bees, and our beekeepers!  Funds raised will enable Bee Girl to continue to conserve our bees by educating the public on their importance through our programs focused on community classes and events, public lectures, our Kids and Bees program, and our University program. The Bee Girl organization also facilitates the Farming for Bees initiative, empowering and recognizing land managers who provide habitat for our bees. Bee Girl engages with communities across the nation, and the globe, spreading knowledge and bringing a sense of wonder from the hive to the people.

Aside from the amazing line up of musicians, we will be offering a honey-themed dinner featuring locally farmed food for purchase, a silent auction full of sweet items, a photo booth, and of course a costume contest!

“Anthemic choruses, irresistible pop harmonies, and the kind of exuberant vibes that everyone can use”

“The sing-along of 2014″
-Esquire (A-Z SXSW Bands You Need To Hear)

“Divisionary (Do The Right Thing)’ is the #1 Song of 2014 So Far”
-Paste Magazine

 “Band to watch”
-TIME Magazine

Paste Magazine says this about the Portland band’s newest album, rating it in the top 25 albums of the year so far :

13. Ages & Ages – Divisionary
Ages and Ages’ debut LP, Alright You Restless, was an ambitious, conceptual piece of sing-along, clap-along, stomp-along pop rock that vaulted the band into elite company. That first record pontificated upon the throes of isolation as a form of revolution, elated choral melodies anchoring shimmery guitars and tight rhythmic interludes throughout. The Portland conglomerate’s second album, Divisionary, is a lot of that, too; there are plenty of goosebump-raising hooks and uplifting crescendos to write home about. Their thematic scope, however, involved the excavation of darker inspirations than they’d previously explored as a band. Ages and Ages have undergone lineup changes and lots of peripheral personal battles and have somehow managed to internalize and later deduce how to navigate the avenues of their own lives in triumphant—and insanely memorable—song. In the process, they’ve come out with one of this year’s best all-around albums.

Ages and Ages is more than a band. It’s a collective of like-minded souls that believe in the power of music to change the world and elevate the spirit. Their music is bright and uplifting, with lyrics, penned by bandleader Tim Perry, that deliver serious introspective messages full of insight and consideration for others.

Ages and Ages is: Rob Oberdorfer – Bass, vocals Tim Perry – guitar, vocals John McDonald – guitar, vocals Levi Cecil – drums, vocals Becca Shultz – keys, vocals Annie Bethancourt – percussion, vocals Sarah Riddle – percussion, vocals

The primary reason for a new name is that Jazz inadequately describes our Festival. In fact, Jazz as an unqualified descriptor may be detrimental as many people carry pre-conceived notions.

Before anyone thinks we are committing “Hari-Kari,” please take a look at our outstanding band line-up. If you’ve been to our Festival or a few others, the names will be very familiar.

As the Jazz Age fades further and further into the sunset, Jazz itself has morphed from hot, toe tapping music into an all too often fused cacophony of seemingly random discordant sounds. The word Jazz and what it means has become impossible to define. Is Jazz Kenny G? Is Jazz Dave Brubeck? Is Jazz Louis Armstrong or is Jazz Chick Corea or Charlie Parker? Ask 5 people and you’ll get 5 different answers. All the answers may be correct within a given context.

This Festival has long presented a wide variety of music. Stan Mark and his Hot Hornz Las Vegas Show Band appeared in 1996, Gator Beat Zydeco shortly thereafter in 1997 and Pieces of Eight Blues and Rhythm in Blues in 1998. The point being that the Medford Jazz Festival has had other music for a long time.

If you read our mission statement, you’ll see that Traditional Jazz is our “reason to be.” To be faithful to our premise of birth, there will always be a traditional or Dixie component. We like to say that our music is period-contemporary; i.e., the music at this festival marched in lock-step with Jazz on the radio, TV, concert halls, dives and dance halls through the first 60 years of the 20th century. It’s music with a melody, a danceable beat and by-damn, it just sounds good!

We are presenting our 26th festival in 2014. We hope you’ll come and bring your friends and neighbors because regardless of the name, it’s the best bargain in live entertainment.
